Indications:
Diarrhea management, it has been tried in the treatment of large numbers that may be related to zinc deficiency, in deficiency states zinc sulfate is given by mouth as the zinc supplement.
WHO and UNICEF
recommend that infants and children with diarrhea should receive zinc
sulfate in addition to ORS as an anti-diarrheal in acute and chronic diarrhea.
Dose:
Adults: 70-140 mg three times daily.
Children infants: Zinc deficiency : 1.35-2.70 mg zinc
monohydrate/kg/day (0.5-1mg elemental zinc/kg/day) divided in 1-3 times daily.
Large doses may be required if impaired intestinal absorption or an excessive loss
of zinc (eg. Excess prolong diarrhea)
Adverse reactions/Side effects:
The most frequent adverse reaction effects of zinc salts
administrated by mouth are gastrointestinal like abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and
nausea. These are particularly common if zinc salts are taken on an empty
stomach and may be reduced by administration with meals.
Interactions:
The absorption of zinc may be reduced by iron supplements,
penicillamine, phosphorus-containing preparations, and tetracycline
