Indications and Dose:
Schizophrenia and other psychoses
By Mouth
Adult: initially 20-30 mg daily in divided doses. Increased
if necessary up to 150 mg daily, usual maintenance 20-50 mg daily (max. per
dose 40 mg) , for debilitated patients, use an elderly dose
Elderly: Initially 5-15 mg daily in divided doses, increased
if necessary up to 150 mg daily, usual maintained 20-50 mg daily (max. per
dose 40 mg)
By Injection
Adult: Usually 200-400 mg by deep IM injection every two to
four wees, maximum 600 mg a week
Children: Not recommended
Contraindications:
Acute with caution in patients with convulsive disorders or
advanced hepatic or cardiovascular disease. Should not be administrated during
pregnancy
Drugs reactions/Adverse reactions:
Not be given concomitantly with guanethidine or similar
acting compounds, since neuroleptic may block the antihypertensive effects of
these compounds, May lower the effects of levodopa, and adrenergic drugs and
concomitant use of metoclopramide and piperazine increases the risk of
extrapyramidal symptoms.
